It was the same song and dance over and over again between these two.
Robb Hardy and Veronica Hardy.
She never changed her name after Robb ended their second marriage when his first wife, Cassandra, returned from a fake death due to her father’s involvement with the government. Robb was furious at the circumstances, as he had to grieve and raise his and Cassie’s children, Junior & McKena, on his own. That was until Veronica came into the picture. They met on the set of Robb’s television show, Gangs of Los Angeles, and it was love at first sight. The show itself was horrible, but Robb had a thriving career and Veronica was a budding star.
Their relationship and marriage seemed like a modern day love story but it came crashing down, as Robb felt it was his duty to return to Cassie and give his children the chance to be with both of their parents at the same time. But that was just a pipe dream. Over and over, Robb and Veronica would come back to each other, ending whatever relationship Robb was in with someone at the time. But the pain from the original break up put too much of a strain on, so eventually, they would go their separate ways.
This time though? This was their longest time apart without seeing or talking to each other. Robb kept tabs on Veronica though, as he couldn’t help himself. Veronica was the love of his life and she always had been. Robb had always felt that way, no matter where he was at in his life, Veronica meant more to him than anything, even with the years of not speaking to each other. But now Veronica had made her presence known over social media, a place she mostly avoided, despite her fame as an actress.
This caught a great deal of attention, including from Robb and now? The two have agreed to meet up. Robb was already there at the meet up spot. It was a hole in the wall taco stand that Veronica had brought him to before they were even dating. It was one of Veronica’s favorite spots and as for Robb? He didn’t like being there unless she was with him due to the memories they shared there, which is why he asked her to meet there again.
Nostalgia.
Being the stickler he is for showing up on time, Robb grew impatient waiting around. So, he ordered his food but also Veronica’s favorite dish from the taco stand as well. He stood there at the LA street corner, wearing a white shirt and black jeans, both far too large for him but it was his style, despite it no longer being the late 90’s/early 2000’s. He had one hand in his pocket and the other carried the plastic bag that had the food in it. One of his legs started to bounce up and down on the sidewalk under him, one of his nervous habits that had never gone away.
While Robb was always on time, Veronica almost always arrived ten minutes late for anything. She was firm in her belief that things could wait for her arrival and she did very much enjoy being able to make a grand entrance. Not that she could have been able to sneak past Robb with the way he was standing on that street corner, clearly waiting for her, no doubt feeling the same anxious emotions she was about meeting face to face once more after all of this time.
At least this place was tucked enough far away that she had been able to leave her hotel without being followed by the usual crowd of paparazzi desperate to take her picture. Veronica strides with confidence down along the sidewalk as she approaches closer to Robb, far more dressed up than he was in a brand new designer dress featuring a pattern of bright colorful flowers. Her hair pulled back in a messy updo that left a few strands framing her face as she focused her eyes upon her ex-husband. Even after all of this time, he still remained familiar, someone she could depend upon almost as if they had never parted ways in the first place.
Veronica Hardy: Have you been waiting long? I know you’re always fifteen minutes early.
The corners of her mouth are turned upwards into a slight smirk as she raises one eyebrow, greeting him as she teases, reaching out with one hand to touch his arm slightly. Robb was almost a statue at this point. Just seeing her and feeling her hand on his arm froze him in time. After a few seconds, he shook it off and couldn’t help but smile but before he could reply, the worker at the taco stand answered for him, in Spanish.
Taco Stand Worker: Ha estado aquí durante una hora.
The words translated to, ‘He's been here for an hour.’ Robb’s jaw dropped, not knowing what was just said as he glanced at the worker and then back at Veronica.
Robb Hardy: Wait a minute… What did he just say about me?
Veronica Hardy: Nothing that I didn’t already know.
Veronica laughs a bit as she gives the worker a quick wink before sliding her arm into Robb’s, so she could lead them further away for some privacy. It was exactly what they needed if they wanted to be open and honest with each other while talking.
Veronica Hardy: Come on, we wanted to be able to talk without interruptions, right?
Robb practically stumbled along as Veronica pulled him along with her. Somehow he forgot how assertive she could be when something needed to be done and the two of them speaking in private was the utmost important right now.
Robb Hardy: I’m coming, I’m coming! You don’t gotta drag me!
He was tense at first but her arm being locked in with his put him at ease as he followed her.
Robb Hardy: But yeah, you’re right, definitely wanna talk without interruptions. Though you aren’t really hiding your appearance. Shouldn’t you have on a baseball cap and sunglasses? Instead you showed up looking like America’s next top model!
Veronica keeps a firm hold on his arm as she leads him back further where some tables have been set up outdoors where they are able to talk. She glances around to make sure that they are alone before finally releasing her hold on his arm as she gives him a pointed look.
Veronica Hardy: I didn’t spend time on getting my hair done just to ruin it all with a baseball cap.
She makes a gesture with one hand to indicate to him that he should join her at the table, keeping her eyes locked on his every moment, an amused smirk once again appearing on her lips. She decides to throw out a bit of a challenge in his direction.
Veronica Hardy: Are you saying I shouldn’t have made the effort for you?
He set the food down on the table before his jaw dropped as she made that last statement.
Robb Hardy: Oh, uh… No! I’m not saying that! I was just, I don’t know what I meant. Nevertheless, you’d look great no matter what you have on, but I do appreciate the effort.
He looked down at his clothes and the only nice thing he has on were the Air Jordan’s on his feet.
Robb Hardy: I guess I should’ve made more of an effort, my bad. Ain’t really used to wearing fancy stuff, even as a general manager of a wrestling company.
Robb walked over to the chair near Veronica and pulled it out for her and she took a seat before he went over and sat down himself. He pulled her food out of the bag and set it down in front of her with a smile.
Robb Hardy: Still remembered your favorite, so I guess that gives me some points or something, right?
Veronica Hardy: Of course. I would have been disappointed if you had forgotten.
She reaches for the container he had placed down in front of her, bringing it closer, opening it up with a big smile on her face. This was almost like going back in time for her as they are back in one of her favorite places to eat. Just the two of them.
Veronica Hardy: So a general manager now, huh? That must be exciting.
He started to unwrap his burrito that he had ordered from himself as he shrugged.
Robb Hardy: It’s not as exciting as being in the ring, but I guess I’m a little past my prime for all of that. I mean, I’m only 40, but with both of my kids out there wrestling? It’s probably best I just sit back and enjoy retirement. But hey, I’m definitely getting paid well. The perks of running a company for a billionaire like Chuck Matthews, you know?
He laughed before he shook his head.
Robb Hardy: But enough about me, I’d rather hear about how the A-list lifestyle has been treating you lately? Hang with anyone cool? Also, how much does everyone make fun of that scary movie Rayven and Gavin were in? You know, Silent But Deadly?
Robb can’t help but laugh as he brought up the critically panned movie that Rayven Hardy and Gavin Grimes starred in together. Veronica makes a face almost immediately in response, but it’s quickly replaced with a laugh as she shakes her head.
Veronica Hardy: We all make some poor decisions when we’re young, I’ve been in some movies that were terrible after all.
She’s still laughing as she picks up one of her tacos, making sure to keep a firm hold on it so nothing spills out onto her dress.
Veronica Hardy: As for all the cool people I’ve been hanging out with? I could name names, but I’m not out here trying to make you jealous.
Robb laughed before he playfully rolled his eyes.
Robb Hardy: I don’t know if I’d be jealous. Well, maybe if you mentioned some of the guys you've been hanging with.
He laughed before he took a bite out of his burrito and immediately, some of the contents spilled right onto his shirt. He set the burrito to the side and sighed as he looked at Veronica.
Robb Hardy: Don’t you start with the ‘I told you so’, alright? Some shit never changes.
Veronica tries her best to bite her tongue as she grabs some of the napkins on the table, getting up out of her chair, she moves closer to where he is sitting so she can start trying to help him clean up the mess on his shirt. This brings them closer together as she looks into his eyes.
Veronica Hardy: It’s a good thing you didn’t get dressed up for tonight, right?
As they were closer together now, Robb made the mistake of gazing right into those green eyes of Veronica’s, getting lost in them.
Robb Hardy: Uh huh…
Robb finally blinked and then cleared his throat.
Robb Hardy: Uh, yeah, I guess it’s a good thing. But I mean, I guess I should have dressed up better, regardless. I suppose I could next time we meet u-...
Robb paused for a moment. Who was he kidding? A next time? There usually never was a next time. They constantly danced around their feelings and then went their separate ways. He then let out an awkward laugh.
Robb Hardy: Sorry, that would be presuming there would be a next time.
He reached his hand back behind his head and ran his hand through his hair nervously.
Robb Hardy: So… We probably should actually talk about what we should talk about. You know, the thing about the stuff or whatever.
It was obvious that Robb was nervous and tripping over his words at this point. Around anyone else, Robb was very stoic and could act like a stone statue, but with Veronica? That was impossible. He didn’t know how to play it cool or even shut himself off. Any guard he put up? She didn’t just knock it down, she obliterated it like it was the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Veronica Hardy: That is what we came here for.
Veronica clears her throat softly as she reaches for one of the bottles of water to pour some on the napkin before she focuses her attention back to the mess he had made on his shirt. It was one way to provide herself with a distraction while she also tried to deal with all of the feelings pushing their way around inside of her heart. More than anything she knew this was something they could no longer keep avoiding like they had done for so many years. They still found themselves right back in this place, still with feelings running wild.
Veronica Hardy: It’s obvious we still care about each other or we wouldn’t keep being drawn back into our lives.
As she is speaking, Veronica looks back towards him, a small almost sad smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as she gently pats the front of his shirt.
Veronica Hardy: It’s just always so complicated, isn’t it? You have your life, I have mine, but still I want to make sure that you’re okay. That the kids are okay. That we can still be…
She trails off, almost unsure about what word to use to describe what they even are to each other, it was much more than exes and she knew they were both aware of that fact. As she patted her hand on the front of his shirt, he reached up and placed his hand over hers, keeping it there.
Robb Hardy: Ronni…
His eyes were peering directly into hers as they both sat there in silence for a few seconds. With Robb keeping Veronica’s hand on his chest, she could feel his heartbeat growing faster as he searched for the right words to say.
Robb Hardy: I… I’m tired of fighting this. I’ve tried to leave you alone and let you live your life but shit, I can’t even live my own life. Everything I’ve tried to build since we split? It failed. It always fails and you want to know why? Because none of these women are you.
He squeezed her hand tightly and kept on talking, not giving her a chance to say anything yet.
Robb Hardy: I have crazy dreams where I’m given a choice of who to save between all of the women I’ve had a relationship with. The dreams happen even when I’m with somebody and guess what? I choose you. Every fuckin’ time, you’re the one I pick because right here?
Robb, having a grip of her hand still, tapped it onto his chest a few times, right over his heart.
Robb Hardy: You have control over that. My heart has always been yours and nobody else’s. It’s always going to be that way, even if you decide to walk outta here on your own. All I ask is that if you do choose to walk away? Keep it that way. Stop checking in on me, stop appearing and then disappearing. Just stop. Because I can’t play this game anymore. I love you, with everything that I’ve got and I don’t want to be apart anymore. I just need to know if you feel the same?
After going on a rant about how he feels, Robb stopped talking. He couldn’t look Veronica in the eyes anymore, all of this being too much already for him. He looked away and he let go of her hand and he shook his head with a sigh. So many emotions were running through his mind and to be honest? He expected the worst possible outcome after saying all of this, which is why he just had to look away, because he was scared. Robb could take on a 400 pound, 7 foot tall giant in the ring and not be afraid but this? Taking all of his armor off emotionally? It was the scariest thing he could ever do.
Veronica Hardy: Robb…
She swallows down the lump that’s formed in her throat after listening to him pouring out all of his emotions. Everything he felt, she felt it just as much, it’s what kept them so connected. The strong pull of their love for each other that never fully faded. The sparks kept flying even now as she gently placed her hand back on his chest.
Veronica Hardy: I have always loved you, from the very beginning, and just as much here and now. I don’t want to keep walking away, I don’t want to be afraid, I just needed to know that you wanted me as much as I do…
She places her other hand on his chest, just as gently as she did the first, pulling herself closer to him so that the gap becomes almost non-existent. Her face is close to his own as she looks into his eyes, staring almost right through him, beyond what was there on the surface.
Veronica Hardy: I want the life we had together again, but better this time, I want to be open and honest with each other. I want to make sure that we never lose each other like we did before, because I don’t think my heart could handle it any longer, it needs to be all or nothing.
Robb blinked, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Veronica felt the same and she wanted it all or nothing as well? His eyes didn’t leave hers this time.
Robb Hardy: Ronni, I…
He didn’t have time for words at this point, especially with Veronica so close to him. Robb placed his hand on her cheek, leaned in and kissed her passionately. After a few moments, Robb broke the kiss and leaned back, only a couple of inches, as he kept his eyes on hers, not wanting to ever look away again. All he wanted was this.
Robb Hardy: Then let’s do it again but do it right. And if we’re gonna be open and honest with each other? Then I’m going to tell you exactly what I want.
He brushed a strand of hair from her face before resting his hand on her cheek once again.
Robb Hardy: I want to marry you again. I don’t care if it’s a big thing or if you just wanna go to the courthouse and just get it done and over with. It don’t matter, I just want it more than anything, to show that I’m all in on this. Nah, that we are all in on this.
Veronica Hardy: I would love to marry you again…
Her green eyes are shining with excitement as the smile grows even wider on her face. She places one of her hands over his, wanting to keep the connection between them strong.
Veronica Hardy: I don’t care if it’s in front of the entire world or just us two. As long as we’re together, that’s all I care about, and I will never walk away again.
Now she’s the one to lean in once more to press her lips against his, wanting to further show him how committed she was to this, how willing she was to jump back into their relationship with both feet. No longer clinging onto the fears from the past, too much time had been lost already. They shared this little moment together for a bit, neither one wanting to pull apart. But it was Robb who broke the kiss and what he did next surprised Veronica, as he placed a hand under her legs and one on her back before sweeping her up into his arms as he stood up.
Robb Hardy: I’m tired of waiting. I don’t even want to wait another minute. Screw everyone else, this is about us, you and me. So, let’s go seal the deal, sign whatever dumb paperwork we gotta sign and make it official. Because I’m not letting you out of my sight until it’s real.
Veronica Hardy: Robb!
She’s laughing out loud, a laughter filled with genuine happiness, as she makes sure to keep her arms wrapped tightly around his neck while he begins to walk carrying her all of the way. In this moment the only thing the both of them are focused on is each other and it was easy to tell from the way they were moving like nothing else in the world mattered.
Veronica Hardy: Let’s go and make me your wife. Again.
Once more she is laughing completely swept off her feet as she lets her head rest up against his shoulder feeling safe in the way he was holding her in his arms. They would find the nearest place that would marry them here tonight as they set off to begin the next chapter of their lives.
Robb Hardy and Veronica Hardy.
