“They’ve promised that dreams can come true - but forgot to mention that nightmares are dreams, too.”
– Oscar Wilde –
Kace Matthews awoke in a dimly lit hospital room. He was in a hospital gown, with several stitches on his head from head shots that he took from Nicole the night before. He had been up for twenty four hours due to the head shots he took, being diagnosed with a grade two concussion, so they wouldn’t let him sleep. Though that’s not something that Kace would have remembered.
Kace also had all sorts of wires sticking out of him, connected to machines as they kept track of his vitals. His vision was blurry and his head was heavy. Kace looked to his left and there was a woman standing there, mumbling about being his ‘emergency contact’ and how she had ‘better things to do than play doctor.’ Kace tried to speak but his throat was too dry. Was this Keira? Kace hadn’t seen or heard from his sister in a long time.
She disappeared on him again, just like she did for six years when he was a teenager. Kace was left alone with a mother that was never home and the memory of what his family used to be. Dad had died a long time ago and mom ended up drowning herself in her legal work. Keira, the rebel, left to chase her dreams. Speaking of dreams, that was Kace’s worst one, a nightmare, in fact.
Being alone.
And once again, that alone feeling has crept right back into his spine. He can feel it crawling all over him. He has nobody right now, besides whoever this woman is berating him. Kace’s vision finally clears for a moment and it’s his mom standing in front of him. Was she making sure that Kace was okay? No, she was criticizing him and his life choices but Kace heard none of it, as his ears were ringing uncontrollably. He felt himself starting to fade, The combination of the beating he took and whatever pain meds they had given to Kace had him completely out of it.
But it was at that moment when Teagan Gallagher, his girlfriend, walked into the room with Kace’s dog, Max. Teagan heard whatever it was that Kace’s mother was saying to him and she went into protective mode. Kace continued to fade but he held on until his mother stormed out of the room.
Boom.
Kace’s head dropped hard down onto the pillow and he was out. Teagan rushed over to his bedside, which she had only left at times to take Max on walks, and she placed a hand on his. “Kace? Can you hear me?” Kace squeezed her hand, holding it so tight that it started to hurt, but Teagan didn’t pull away. His eyes fluttered open and they were glassy and though his vision was blurry, the one thing he could clearly see was Teagan. “Please don’t leave me, Teegs. I need you.” She placed her free hand on his head and peered into his eyes. “I’m not going anywhere, Kace. Max and I are right here and we’re going to take care of you. We always will, I promise.” A hint of a smile appeared on Kace’s face. “Teagan, I have to tell you something. I…” Before he could finish, Kace fell back asleep and his grasp on Teagan’s hand eased but he didn’t let go.
He didn’t want to be alone.
