The dimly lit prep room buzzed with excitement as the Crucible Academy students began suiting up for the laser tag game. Legion members were gathered in one corner, already sporting smug grins. Kiana Masters stood before them, her arms crossed and an air of authority radiating off her as a staff member handed out protective gear and laser guns to each player. Sleek chest plates with reinforced padding, intimidating-looking helmets that fully concealed their faces but without compromising their vision, highly durable forearm guards fitted with hidden proximity sensors — the works. They looked over at the other players, they too had similar equipment.
Angun Chen hesitated as she examined her gear. “Uh this feels… a little intense for laser tag.”
Some of the Legion members voiced their agreement while some just kept quiet. Evelyn Voss, better known as Malice, looked more like she was ready to test her gun on Sara Stevens who’s warning her to back off while hiding behind Rick Victore. Seeing this, Kiana called Malice over to a corner, away from the rest. Malice thought she was going to get a scolding but Kiana just gave her a cool smile.
“You like?” Kiana asked, gesturing to the equipment Malice was wearing.
A wide smirk crept across Malice’s lips and she nodded. “Yes, yes. This will be fun. Look at the team you have assembled.”
She gestured to them all, except Sara. ‘Fuck Sara,’ she thought.
“You must be proud. I see predators, killers!” Whether Malice meant that metaphorically or literally was probably up for interpretation.
Kiana laughed, amused by Malice’s excitement. But there was a surprise that Kiana had which she kept in her jacket pocket. She pulled it out, showing her a silver key.
“Malice, you did good in your debut. Very good. And I did promise you that we will celebrate it. But I also remember you saying that you want to be unleashed. You want fun. And I asked you what your idea of fun was,” Kiana said, a dark gleam in her eyes. “But I think it might be better that you show me instead. So here.”
She took Malice’s hand and placed the key into her palm. Then she gestured towards their left side, a corridor that led to the control room. “Show what you can do. Have fun. Celebrate.”
Head cocked to one side, Malice listened to Kiki closely. They key caught her eye instantly, she took it and gleefully smiled. “Oh…you want to play?”
She looked around.
“Let’s play, let’s play. Watch this.”
Without any delay, she skipped away, key in hand. Malice went straight into the control room and then, not a few moments later, the lights in the arena faltered. All but Kiki were taken off guard by this, though she did well to feign her own shock.
A few fights broke out almost at the same time. The first one was between Crucibelles and Boston Finest triggered by Jade trying to shoot with her gun that mysteriously jammed and a smirking Bella firing at her. Ruby and Summer quickly jumped in to defend, and so did Ray and Kenny Dougie who tried to separate them. In the scuffle, Summer accidentally knocked her laser gun into Ray’s face, breaking his nose. Kenny tried to pull Ray to his feet, only to get shoved back by Bella as she swung wildly at Ruby.
The second one was started by Alizay Perkins, Trinity Ann and Rey Veneno, who didn’t want to be left out of the thrilling chaos, rushed all of them with their guns. They knocked them down one by one before Angun and Colt Anderson stepped in to stop them. Trinity tweaked the setting on her rigged gun and used it to deliver a strong shock through Angun and Colt’s vests while Rey whacked them both in the guts.
And last but not least was Malice chasing after Sara who tried to run away, using Rick Victore, Maya Hardy, Jaime Idol and Levi Hall as human shields. This caused a lot of commotion as Malice attacked them all just to get to Sara who somehow managed to keep herself out of Malice’s reach. But it soon turned into a full-blown Legion vs Nightfall brawl.
Watching from the safety of the control room, Kiana leaned back in her chair, a satisfied smile on her face as the arena descended into utter mayhem. Behind her was what looked like the grim painting of a black cloaked figure whose face was shadowed by the low brim of its hood. Kiana started whistling a little tune as she checked through the cameras that gave different angles of the chaos inside the arena.
“You know what? You’re right, this is fun! You always know what to do,” Kiana said with an easy chuckle. For the first time since taking on this significant job as head trainer for Legion, she was feeling more like herself again.
And that painting of the hooded figure behind her suddenly was not there anymore. Was it ever there at all… or did it move?
