I just feel crushed without you
'Cause I've been strong for so long
That I never thought how much I needed you
I think I'm lost without you
Don’t let him get in your head Haven. You know the truth. That’s all that matters.
In the hours that followed the fateful meeting, Haven West was a wreck. After she watched two police officers place Aiden in the back of a waiting police car, something other than the wrenching hurt that had her in a grip since they first walked out of the restaurant rose up in her throat. Bile burned as she leaned up against the wall just outside. Patrons filtered out to get a better look at the chaotic ending. One woman turned to check on Haven, offering a hand to her shoulder. Tears streamed down Haven’s cheeks as she struggled to find a breath. A phone still gripped in her hand that didn’t belong to her she had tossed it onto the passenger seat of the car as she climbed in. take care of yourself. That’s what Auden had said to her, his gaze, his attention fixated on her even in all of the chaos.
Even as the man she had only just known, her so-called father, had cried out with his lies, had fed them to those officers as though they were birds waiting on his scattered crumbs. She hadn’t noticed it at first, it was only when she finally reached out to someone from Legion that it had become obvious to her. Why hadn’t Ethan Jaa defended himself? A world champion fighter, the man who had ended careers without so much as a follow-up glance. Someone so dangerous it had led her mother to abandon her in hopes of keeping her safe…
In 48hrs I’ve managed to undo 18 years of sacrifices and disrespect everything my mother did to keep me safe.
It had been hours, closer to Saturday morning than Friday night when someone finally appeared to talk to Haven. She had driven straight here; at first it was anger that drove her. Demanding to see him, for someone to answer her questions. She had slammed her hands down on the desk, raised her voice and screamed until she was hoarse. She had fought them on every push back until they were ready to arrest her too… she wasn’t a citizen. It wouldn’t help. There was nothing she could do for Aiden if she was locked up in a cell next to his.
The thought of him being locked up in a cell had made her sick, an empty waste paper bin being kicked over to her as she knelt on the floor of the police station. Her previously carefully styled blonde hair now a mess, pulled back from her face as she expelled the anger from her body along with whatever she had left in her stomach.
I made a stupid choice.
Guilt. It weighed on her like a crushing, insurmountable punishment. Why had she asked him to come? She had gotten complacent, she had believed that the running and the constant need to just survive was becoming something left in her past. She had trusted the purity of their love, that she was worthy of something so soft and safe and warm - she had let herself relax, feel like she was home… she had wanted that so badly that she had forgotten everything she learned. Ignored the gnawing doubt in the pit of her stomach that was now clawing its way up to her heart, leaving her feeling like she was being ripped to pieces from the inside.
Haven had believed, for just one fleeting moment, that she wasn’t a curse, that she wouldn’t end up hurting everyone and anyone that tried to love her. That the legacy she had been so afraid of consuming her wasn’t who she had to be. And the world had been sure to remind her, that she was nothing more than the sum of her parts. A walking reminder of the sins of her parents, inflicted on the world by her mere existence.
Can you get here…?
Over 12 hours since they first arrived at the station, Haven was still sitting in the same seat she had taken since they sent her away from the desk. She had lost count of the amount of times that she had walked up there and asked for them to tell her something, anything. Every time they turned away, she felt another pull of that weight dragging her down towards the floor. The look on the officers faces behind the glass felt like pity, even when the shifts changed and fresh faces came in, no one would tell her anything.
She couldn’t hold on alone anymore and so she had reached out to the only person she could think of, a man she had come to see as an older brother, the one she had trusted with everything before she even knew she could trust. Seven Wolfe hadn’t hesitated, jumping into action and talking her down; it wasn’t the same calm that Aiden brought her, but it was enough to get her to refocus. To stop and think. It was because of him that she reached out to Cami, that she finally brought Legion in on what was happening.
The speed at which they took over and things started to happen added another splash of guilt to her already overflowing cup. Haven was so afraid of letting people in that she had forgotten they were his family too, more so than they were hers and that there were people who would help, could help… wanted to help. While she sat on that bench, the lines of the unrelenting steel beneath her leaving marks across the backs of her legs as she wrapped her fingers around the seat, leaning forward to fight the exhaustion that was overtaking her.
She hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten. All she had done was sit here and wait, ask, please, beg them for anything. Sips of water from a cup a well meaning officer had handed her hours ago was the only thing she felt capable of keeping down. As exhaustion began to sink its claws into her, dragging her toward an unsettled slumber out of her body’s sheer desperation to rest, to take a breath…
”Are you ready for us to take your statement Miss West?” The soft tone of the officers question made her forget for a second, opening her mouth to agree she felt the touch of a hand on her shoulder, dragging her eyes open to look up at him with a relieved sigh.
”Not without her lawyer she isn’t.” Seven Wolfe stood next to the bench, his hand reassuringly placed on her shoulder as she rebuffed the officers request, shaking a hand to dismiss them before he took a seat beside her. Finally she could breathe, just like everyone had been telling her to and as she exhaled;
She fell apart.
